Lesson Overview:

Students will take what they learned from the previous lessons to create a 3D map of the Vietnam War. This lesson will be used as a wrap up and form of assessment. Students will use what they learned about Propaganda and the influence of the media on the war, the basic timeline of the war, the information they learned from the journal of a Vietnam soldier and the art of Martha Rosler to create their own “visual” of the Vietnam War. This will be a fun way for students to show what they learned about the war and the influence it had, and for the teacher to use a different form of a assessment for something that usually is assessed by tests; history.

Prior Knowledge:

Information about the Vietnam War

Knowledge from the previous lessons about:

Media influencing the Vietnam War

Journal entry from a Vietnam soldier

Information about Martha Rosler

How to create a 3D diagram (students have made one previously)

Art techniques

Instruction:

1.     First we will do a short review of the previous lessons:

·      Propaganda posters

·      Decrease in support for war

·      Coverage of the war-tv

·      Patrick Seamus Flaherty

·      Basic timeline

·      Journal entry

·      Martha Rosler

This will include any questions students may still have and a discussion of their thoughts about what they have learned.

Guiding questions:

What topic interested you the most about the Vietnam War?

What would you like to learn more about?

Did you like Martha Rosler’s art?

How would have you reacted to the Propaganda Posters?

Did anything confuse you or make you have more questions?

What questions do you still have?

2.     Hand out assignment sheet that has what needs to be included in the 3D poster along with some ideas/examples. Give time to students to look over assignment and then ask if they have any questions. This will include the whole assignment-time that they will have to complete it and what they will do with it after etc.

3.     Hand out poster board and other supplies, make sure students know they are not limited to the supplies handed out they can make their own props and pictures etc. to make their poster board creative and individual.

4.     Allow students to spread out around the classroom and allow them to work where they would like. Teacher should walk around the classroom, observing students progress, guiding them in the right direction, sitting down with each individual student for a few minutes and answering any questions or helping them talk through their posters.

5.     Explanation of how students will complete project (assignment sheet):

Assignment Sheet

Students will be using what they learned in the previous lessons on the Vietnam War to go more in depth and create a 3D poster.

Please make sure you are CREATIVE! … This project should be FUN!

First, you will create an outline of what you would like to include in your 3D poster

i.e. details about the influence media had on the war, Martha Rosler art, your journal entry etc.

Then you will create your poster making it 3D with figurines or items you create out of art materials using art techniques that you have learned in our previous art lessons.

Feel free to do more research to further your ideas you are putting on your poster. (Some examples for websites were provided)

Once complete, you will share with a classmate

Make any changes necessary and then write a page or two explaining what is on your poster

When everyones projects are complete we will share with the whole class and then display around the classroom

**We will work on this project over a time period of 2 weeks.

6.     Once students feel as though they are finished allow them to share with someone in the class, have students ask each other questions and check each others work to make sure it makes sense and they did not miss any of the steps or important items on the poster.

7.     Give students time to go back and add to or change any part of their poster

8.     Next, have students type a short paper on what their poster represents

9.     Students will then share their 3D poster and explain their poster.

10. The teacher will assess the students poster by content (making sure they have the important aspects of what they learned, and the information is correct)

11. The 3D posters with the students writing will then be displayed around the room.
