Lesson Overview:
This lesson is meant to engage the students through an interactive activity on famous people, landmarks and events related to the Underground Railroad. These concepts will be addressed through a classroom scavenger hunt with each clue found leading up to a final reveal of a specific person, landmark or event. The class will be divided up into teams and the instructor in charge can choose to make it a friendly competition or just team completion.
Preperation:
Prior Knowledge: This is the fourth lesson in a unit plan on slavery and the Underground Railroad so students should be fairly familiar with certain elements of this topic. They should at least already know the handful of Underground Railroad elements that are being searched for and the clues that are associated with the final answer of what they are looking for.
Materials:

flashcards with clues written on it for both the Underground Railroad person, place or thing and where the next clue is located in the classroom

the classroom should be staged so as the flashcards are hidden around the room in nooks, taped under desks, in bookshelves, lockers and etc.

Instruction:

The teacher first has to prepare for this lesson by choosing what elements he or she wants to test her class on (famous person, place or thing) and how many she needs for her class size. She will then also need to divide up the class into small groups or teams if he/she wants to make it into a friendly competition.

Next, on flashcards, the teacher should write 4-5 clues based off of each Underground Railroad “element” (person, place or thing). These flashcards should include both the clues for the elements being searched and where the next clue is located around the classroom. The clues addressing where to find the next clue can be cleverly related to the theme or strictly related to the classroom.

The teacher should then hide these clues around the classroom- under desks, bookshelves, behind posters and more.

After this preparation the teacher can introduce to the class the plan. Firstly he or she should establish whether it will be a competition or completion and then separate the class according to groups or teams. Then the teacher will explain to the class that their goal is to find 4-5 clues hidden around the room that will eventually lead to one end goal of a famous person, place or thing related to the Underground Railroad.

Once all instructions and rules of the classroom (no running, use your inside voice, remember to use teamwork) are established the students can be let go. The time limit can be up to the discretion of the teacher; they can use a whole class period or a limit of 20 minutes or whatever they judge to be appropriate. The teacher of course will remain in the classroom to observe, guide and aide if needed. He or she can even play a role as a “clue” along the way.

When the class reaches the time limit student groups will be gathered together and as a group present to the class the clues they found and the final conclusion they come up with. They will also be asked to expand and reflect on how they came to that conclusion. The teacher will confirm if each group is correct and the students will receive accreditation of completion.

8.1.3.C: Conduct teacher guided inquiry on assigned topics using specified historical sources. (Reference RWSL Standard 1.8.3 Research)
8.3.3.B: Identify and describe historical documents, artifacts, and places critical to United States history.
8.3.3.D: Identify and describe how conflict and cooperation among groups and organizations have impacted the history and development of the US (ethnicity and race).
10.2.3.D: Identify the steps in a decision-making process.
10.3.3.D: Identify and use safe practices in physical activity settings (e.g., proper equipment, knowledge of rules, sun safety, guidelines of safe play, warm-up, cool-down).
