Overview

Our unit plan provides children with the opportunity to take on the perspectives of the Japanese Americans who lived in internment camps during WWII through art, writing, and drama, thus supporting the learning of visual, verbal, and kinesthetic learners.

Rationale

This unit plan will reveal the hardships and injustices of life in Japanese internment camps. It will provide students with the opportunity to learn about how the events at Pearl Harbor led to the relocation of over 110,000 Japanese Americas to internment camps. Through this unit plan, students will consider the perspectives of Japanese Americans who lived in internment camps and gain an understanding of what daily life was like in the internment camps. Our unit plan will provide children with the chance to explore the different ways Japanese Americans coped with their harsh circumstances and expressed their thoughts and feelings.
