rethink.
Overview: We will begin this unit by deepening our understanding of the Vietnam War through the perspective of an American and a Vietnamese civilian. Next, we will examine primary sources and artwork by Martha Rosier to see how journalism and broadcasting affected the American perspecitve of the war. Then, students will reflect on the impact of war and the importance of remembering our soldiers by creating a biography of a veteran. Finally, we will read the story, The Wall in order to intrdouce the famous Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC. The students will study the symbolism behind the architecture and design their own classroom memorial in order to honor the fallen soldiers of the war.
Rationale: We want students to engage in the controversies that surround the Vietnam War and to examine and synthesize information from differing perspectives to help them understand the history of the War as a whole. By interpreting these opposing viewpoints that create the essence of the Vietnam War, students will develop a thoughtful understanding of how this war deeply affected our nation and the nations in IndoChina. Students will engage with books, photographs, primary sources, and art works to help them define their own interpretation of the events that unfolded during the 1960s and 70s.
