Lesson Overview:

The students have learned all about the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Japanese internment camp, the American’s view point on the Japanese, and the American’s retaliation leading up to the atomic bomb drop.  We will read parts of the graphic novel “Barefoot Gen” aloud as a class, and the students will read more of the book by themselves at home.  We will compare the damage that we suffered with Pearl Harbor compared to the damage that the Japanese suffered from the American’s retaliation. Then the students will draw their own comic strip depicting a problem and how they retaliated. As a class we will look at the students conflict and the dropping of an atomic bomb and discuss if they all took the best course of action or not.

Preparation:

Prior Knowledge:

  • Students will have already learned about Pearl Harbor, Internment camps, American’s views on Japanese Americans, and the dropping of the Atomic bombs.

  • Paper

  • Colored Pencils

Instruction:

  1. As a class we will read the first few chapters aloud of Barefoot Gen in class.

  2. The students will finish reading the graphic novel by themselves during reading time or at home over the few days.

  3. When the students have finished the book we will have a discussion about Graphic Novels. I will use this resource to lead the discussion http://www.ncte.org/magazine/archives/122031 .

  4. Students will draw their own comic strip that tells about a conflict they’ve had in their own lives, and how they retaliated.

  5. As a class we will look through everyone’s comic strips and talk about if they retaliated correctly.

  6. We will then compare our conflicts to the Atomic Bomb and whether or not they retaliated correctly.
