Rationale:

The purpose of this Unit Plan is to have students view different perspectives related to the treatment and removal of Native Americas during the Indian Removal Act. Through a variety of resources, students will explore the truth and context surrounding the events before, during and after the removal of Native Americans from their land. Students will learn to express their perspective related to the exploitation and decisions made to deal with the Native Americans. We want students to give power to their own voices and take a critical stance on the treatment and outlook of Native Americans in the past and also in our present day culture.

Overview:

Throughout the unit, students will be learning about Native Americans and their history through the Indian Removal Act, the Trail of Tears as well as how they were perceived by white Americans, all of which are very controversial issues of America’s history. After learning about these different aspects of Native American lives that were affected by white Americans, students will be learning about the controversy in Neshaminy School District and whether or not the name of their mascot should be changed because it is offensive to Native Americans.
